Prostate Pleasure 101: How to Protect and Pleasure Your Prostate This Movember

Every year in November, Movember is celebrated worldwide. This international campaign, which encourages people to rock moustaches for the month, aims to raise awareness around health concerns that affect men.

One of the risks faced by the male population is prostate cancer - a disease that affects over 4,000 men in South Africa each year and accounts for 13% of their deaths. In many cases, early detection is key, which is why prioritizing prostate health and going for regular checks is crucial.

Prostate protection
First off, where even IS the prostate, and what is its function? Located below the bladder and in front of the rectum, this walnut-sized and -shaped organ creates the fluid found in semen and helps it exit the body during ejaculation. While you may not be able to see it, it’s important to lead a lifestyle conducive to keeping it healthy so that the risk of developing cancer is lowered.

There are several ways to maintain prostate health. Regular exercise, upping vegetable intake, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding bad habits like smoking can go a long way in preserving the prostate. It’s also important for men to begin regular prostate checks from age 50 (or earlier if there is a family history of the disease). These screenings - which include rectal exams performed with a lubed-up finger - might seem intimidating, but are essential for ensuring the prostate is in good condition. These checks can be done by your doctor or at one of the many CANSA Care Centres across the country.

Prostate pleasure
Sure, the prostate might exist to perform necessary bodily functions. But, this sensitive spot can also be a source of *serious* pleasure!

Also referred to as the P-spot, when stimulated, it can lead to mind-blowing orgasms. As such, this area shouldn’t be ignored but rather explored to take your sex life to new and exciting heights!

If you are a newbie when it comes to anal exploration, it’s best to start out slow so that you can be relaxed and comfortable. Here are tips to make the experience simple and satisfying:

  • Load up on lube. This will make it easier for anything from fingers to toys to glide in and out without causing discomfort or friction.

  • Find it with your fingers first. You want to make sure you know where your P-spot is located, and fingers are smaller, offering you more control.

  • Test out different massaging techniques to figure out what feels best. This could include tapping, stroking in circular motions, or making a ‘come here’ gesture.

  • Playing with a partner? Don’t just ram your fingers up there. Take it slow, giving them enough time to relax and feel at ease with these new sensations.

Prostate-pleasing pro? 💦
If you have been around the block (or, rather, the backdoor!) and are familiar and comfortable with prostate play, here’s how you can level-up the bum fun to make your sex session even steamier:

  • Play around with different positions. You could try lying face down with your legs apart, or on your back with your knees pulled up to your chest.

  • If you're ready to move on to something more substantial than fingers, you can try a prostate-massaging sex toy.
  • Don’t limit your focus to just your prostate. Stimulate—or have a partner stimulate—your penis at the same time for double the pleasure.

  • Take things up a notch by engaging in penetrative anal sex, whether it’s a partner pegging you with a strap-on or using a real penis. Don’t forget the lube!
